7W00DX83 Planning and Making Orthotics (3 cr)

Objectives The student demonstrates ability to justify the choice and planning of orthotics using conceptual models and frames of references in occupational therapy. The student has developed knowledge about the indications and contraindications for orthotics and cervical collars. She/he is able to assess the need of an individual for orthotics and cervical collars and their effect on the occupational performance. The student is able to plan and prepare different types of static orthotics and cervical collars to enable clients occupational performance. The student has developed knowledge and skills to apply kinesiological principles in the planning and preparation of orthotics. The student know basic principales wound healing.
Content Utilization of theoretical models of occupational therapy in the selection, design and manufacture of orthoses and support collars. The principles of evaluating the need for various factory-made and custom-made orthoses and support collars. Knowledge of the basis of their manufacture or issuance and the identification of risks related to their use, including application analysis. Design and manufacture of orthoses and support collars, as well as basic kinesiology principles in promoting the client's functionality as part of the occupational therapy process. Basics related to wound care.

Accomplishment methods Student demonstrates competence with self- and peer-assessments and demonstration tasks.
Execution methods Student develops skills by acquiring information about the contents of the themes, working independently and in small groups, and practicing in workshops/simulation exercises.

Student understands and applies a few key occupational therapy theories and models. Student can name and use functional information and the principles of kinesiology as well as related concepts in the selection, design and manufacture of orthoses and support collars. In the performance-oriented assessment of the need for orthoses and support collars based on (reflecting) customer participation, Student describes in detail various basic principles and various alternatives, illustrating with concrete examples. Student can design, manufacture and fit various self-made or factory-made orthoses and support collars to promote the client's functionality as part of the occupational therapy process. Student can name factors related to wound care to take into account when creating a safe interaction relationship.
