7W00DX76 The Basics of Occupational Therapy, Ethics and Philosophy (4 cr)
Prerequisites No prerequisites needed.
Objectives Student is able to identify the definitions of the occupational therapy profession and the occupational therapist profession. Student will describe the diverse job description of the occupational therapist as part of a multi-disciplinary network. Student understands occupational therapy as part of multidisciplinary rehabilitation and well-being services. Student is able to identify and understand occupational therapy as an international profession. Student knows the main features of the history of occupational therapy. Student knows the main contents of the theoretical basis of occupational therapy. Student understands the philosophy, paradigm and theoretical basis of occupational therapy. Student understands the ethical basis of occupational therapy. Student can identify the values of occupational therapy. Student is able to share and discuss students own personal values and ethical principles. Student recognises the processual nature of occupational therapy. Student understands the principles of professional behaviour through the role as an occupational therapy student.
Content Occupational therapy as a profession. Job description and working environments of occupational therapists. Occupational therapy nomenclature. History of occupational therapy. The philosophy, paradigm and theoretical basis of occupational therapy. Values and ethics in occupational therapy. The processual nature of occupational therapy. Professional behaviour.
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.
Accomplishment methods Student will demonstrate the competence through learning tasks and other assignments, as well as in the course exam. Student will demonstrate own competence in practice situations and through workplace visits.
Execution methods Student will develop skills by acquiring knowledge and working independently and in small groups on course assignments and by learning about the occupational therapy profession through practical work.

Student will explain occupational therapy and the job description and profession of an occupational therapist using the occupational therapy nomenclature.
Student will identify the processual nature of occupational therapy. Student will identify the core processes of occupational therapy. Locate occupational therapy within multi-disciplinary rehabilitation and well-being services.
Student uses the international knowledge and literature of the occupational therapy profession.
Student identifies key developments in the history of occupational therapy in Finland and internationally.
Student identifies the paradigm, theoretical basis and key philosophical premises of occupational therapy.
Student will examine the interrelationships between people, action and environment in occupational therapy through one of the theoretical models of occupational therapy.
Student knows the ethical basis of the occupational therapy profession I examine ethical issues through examples. In my own words, explain my personal values and ethical principles.
Student acts professionally in the role of an occupational therapy student.
