The public health nurse is a specialist in public health nursing, wellbeing and health promotion. Key areas of expertise are health promotion and public health nursing in different age individual, family and community health care. The competencies include also promoting of healthy and safe environment and social health care and management and development of public health care.The public health nurse is employed by the social and health centers, home care, hospitals, organizations, projects and entrepreneurs. The public health nurse works with other experts in accordance with their professional values and ethical principles.
An extensive multidisciplinary knowledge base, independent decision-making ability, organizational skills, accountability and continuous self-development are necessary in the work of a public health nurse. The work as a public health nurse requires good interaction skills and the courage to discuss customer's health issues. The public health nurse will strengthen the resources, personal care and the ability to live healthy for clients of different cultural backgrounds and works to reduce health inequalities. In the nursin studies, the focus is on client-oriented, evidence-based and safe nursing of a different age patient. Advanced studies in public health care nursing include the promotion of community and environmental health, public health nursing in different ages clients and the management and development of public health nursing.
Public health nursing education gives the necessary knowledge and skills to provide essential care to anyone who needs it as well as additional skills to provide more especially care of public health care. Teaching and learning methods are varied. Modern technology is used in teaching as well as lectures and practical skills training, study groups, full scale simulations and clinical training in hospitals and health centers in Finland. Theoretical studies are mainly independent studies, web-based courses and seminars. A student exchange abroad and different project works can be recognized as part of the studies. Education helps students to integrate nursing and health care knowledge, skills and attitudes in their work to provide safe and effective public health nursing care.
