AT00DW57 Basic Studies in Folk Dance (20 cr)
Prerequisites Preliminary skills fof the required objectives of the course.
Objectives I set learning goals to develop my own dance skills. I understand the anatomical basic concepts in the folk dance reference framework. I act responsibly in the development of the capabilities and the skills of dance. I will dance in the learning and performance situation the basic level dance material of folk dance in its appropriate style. My dancing is well related to the music. I describe the core phenomena, teaching culture and methods of learning the skills of folk dance. I plan, teach and reflect small teaching tasks that are based on Finnish folk dance. I get familiar withe the professional context of folk dance. I asses the development of my skills and development needs as well as my strengths in relation to folk dance cultures.
Content Basic motor skills: the skills of addressing movement combinations, coordination capability
Dance Technique: Breathing, core support and body support, alignments, grounding, weight transfer and the spatial directions of motion
Sense of dancing style and expression: The expression of movement dynamics and the relationship of dance with music. The characteristics and stylistic features of western Finland.
Interaction and reflection.
Social group dances: Familiarizing of different traditional finnish group dances (square dances, circle dances, line dances, 3-, 6- and 9-person dances) and song accompanied dances.
Small social dances: domestic and foreign dances suitable for versatile situations of social interaction.
Couple Dance: Principles of pair connection, couple dances notes which are typical in the finnish folk dance literary (polka dances). The basic forms and basic variations of the traditional couple dance types such as: schottische, waltz, polka, jenkka, mazurka and hambo. Polska variations that are typically danced in place in the dance space.
Pedagogy: Exploring the pedagogy of Finnish folk dance, breaking down movement combinations for teaching purposes
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.
