SU00CA05 Basics and Methods of Cariological Care (7 cr)
Prerequisites Not applicable
Objectives Part 1. BASICS OF CARIOLOGY (2 ECTS)
The student
- familiarizes him/herself with factors causing oral hard tissue diseases and the evidence based treatment methods
- is able to use and utilize dental terminology
- familiarizes him/herself with non-cariological hard tissue diseases

Part 2. BASIC INTERVENTIONS IN ORAL HEALTH CARE (1 ECTS)
The student had gained knowledge about instruments and materials used in basic oral health care. The student develops ability to perform basic dental practices belonging to a dental surgery assistant`s job description.

Part 3 CARIOLOGICAL CARE (3 ECTS)
The student
- deepens his/her knowledge of the etiology of caries and various cariological treatment methods, especially those he/she will be responsible for
- familiarizes him/herself with the theory and methods of aesthetic dental care
- understands the occurrence of dental fear and its´ relieving methods

Part 4 BASICS OF PEDODONTICS (1 ECTS)
The student
- gains basic knowledge of pedodontics, tooth development and erupting
- is able to perform pedodontic check up, utilizes necessary prevention or treatment methods
Content Part 1.: BASICS OF CARIOLOGY (2 ECTS): Tooth structure and morphology. Dental caries development, classification of dental caries, methods of cariological diagnosis. Different phases in the cariological oral health care work. Non-cariological tooth loss.

Part 2. BASIC INTERVENTIONS IN ORAL HEALTH CARE (1 ECTS)
Tasks of the Dental nurse in the cariological care work. Safe use of instruments and materials used in basic oral health care.

Part 3. CARIOLOGICAL CARE (3 ECTS)
Structure of enamel and dentin. Aetiology and prevention of caries. Principals and exercises of cariological treatment, materials and instruments. Dental fear. Basics of aesthetic dental care.

Part 4 BASICS OF PEDODONTICS (1 ECTS)
Tooth development; mixed dentition stages, deciduous and permanent teeth, dental occlusion. Risk factors, treatment methods. Contents of pedodontic check up.
