Key job functions
Typical care activities in the area of the dental hygienist include oral and dental health examinations, early and maintenance treatment of periodontal disease, removal of stains, aesthetic dentistry, tooth veneering, preventive measures and some orthodontic treatment.
Self-management of the client is part of the overall treatment.
Various project, development, and expert work.
Administrative and managerial tasks.
Sales and marketing tasks.
Planning and implementation of health promotion projects.
Health promotion guidance and counselling is provided by a multidisciplinary team in health centres, as well as in clinics, nurseries, schools and care institutions. The training includes the organisation of health promotion events for different target groups. During the study period, students will also have the opportunity to practise local management tasks and to ensure a safe working environment and health-promoting practices in teaching dental clinics and health centres.

An dental hygienist can work in a health centre, a dental and oral health outpatient clinic, a private dental clinic and in a sales and marketing role. Dental hygienists can also work as self-employed or self-employed persons. The dental hygienist has the skills to act as a coordinator of health promotion and as a coordinator of projects and initiatives for the development of the sector. In addition, they have the ability to work in local management and in research and development in the field.

The professional competences are acquired through the successful completion of theoretical studies and supervised practice. Some of the studies are shared with dental students.
Practical training is carried out in a health centre, in the teaching clinic of the training unit and in the Teaching Dental Clinic of the City of Oulu. Part of the studies can be completed in international student exchange, the international exchange destinations are Ghent, Lisbon and Verona, which have traditionally been popular cooperation destinations, but also Turin, Luleå or Tromsø are possible exchange destinations.

Research priorities are linked to research and development in services and technologies for health and well-being. A key focus will be on themes related to oral health care, health and well-being promotion, interdisciplinary learning and guidance, and education and training development.
