Graduates of the Degree Programme in Social Services are qualified for experts in the field of social services. The qualification requirement for the post of such expert is Bachelor of Health Care and Social Services in a line of study of social work. Examples are the posts of social instructor and kindergarten teacher. Bachelors of Social Services are able to support, counsel and teach clients in their everyday life, in different social environments and activities in a resource- and goal-oriented way. They work in the sectors of early childhood education, child protection, youth work, family work, work with people with special needs, work with elderly people, social insurance, social work, mental health work, work with substance abusers and multicultural work. Specific learning objectives are the following competences: ethical competences in social work, client work, social services, social analysis, reflective development and management, community and society and furthermore learning competence, communicative and social competence, development competence, organisational and societal competence, internationalisation competence.
For all students of the Degree Programme in Social Services the compulsory contents of the programme are study, information and professional studies, research and development studies, social, individual and ethical orientation to social services, counselling for human growth, everyday life and functional ability, counselling and social care work, administration and development of social services. The contents of optional professional studies of social services are rehabilitation, counselling and social support, social security and adult social work, education, teaching and counselling. Bachelors of Social Services work for example in children´s day-care centers, child welfare units, youth work centers, family centers, home care, day centers for older people and people with disabilities, rehabilitation centers, service housing, social insurance institutions, employment and social welfare offices. Their employers are municipalities, state offices, non governmental organisations and private service providers. Bachelor of Social Services can also work as a private service provider of social services.The student of the Degree Programme in Social Services makes his/her personal study plan. In addition to compulsory studies student makes individual decisions based on his/her individual learning objectives and career planning by choosing optional professional studies of social services. The wide choice of optional professional studies enables the student to develop his/her professional expertise in a specific field of social services or to extend it to other fields. This possibility of individual choices is essential for developing of social services today. The education aims at creating new varieties of expertise and developing the social services to better meet the changing needs of the clients. Practical training of 45 credits (= 30 weeks) is included in the Degree Programme. Studies abroad can be included in the Degree Programme. The leading idea of learning is constructivism. In addition to this, attention is paid to the interaction of theoretical and practical training, cooperation, development of different creative problem-solving methods and creative thinking, research and development as well as mastering of the professional skills required in social services.
