OS00DX91 Pediatric Nursing I (5 cr)
Prerequisites The student has completed 120 credits of nursing studies. The student must have completed 3 credits of Fundamentals of Child and Adolescent Nursing and 6 credits of Basic Practice in Child and Adolescent Nursing or equivalent.
Objectives The student masters the essential knowledge and skills of nursing care of children and adolescents of different ages and for different reasons in hospital.

The student will be able to plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for children and adolescents in an ethical and patient-safe manner, applying reliable evidence-based knowledge.

The student will develop their professional competence in the management of medicines, fluids and clinical interventions in children and adolescents.

The student will be able to act in teaching situations as a responsible nurse in a care team and as a coordinator of the overall care of the patient.

The student will analyse his/her own competence and development and be able to contribute to the development of nursing care for children and adolescents.
Content -Caring for sick newborns and premature babies
-Surgical care of children and adolescents
-Critical care for children and adolescents
-Care of children and adolescents with cancer
-Palliative care of children, adolescents and families
-Drug and fluid therapy for children and adolescents
-Clinical interventions in pediatric nursing
-Resuscitation in hospital for children of different ages
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.
Accomplishment methods Most of the active theoretical teaching takes place online. Training and simulation lessons are held at the Kontinkankas campus in Oulu. Attendance for the training and simulation classes is 100%. Other compulsory requirements are specified in the course info on Moodle. The medical bills included in the course will be assessed with pass/fail and the individual and group exams will be assessed with grades T1-K5.
Execution methods I develop my skills by acquiring theoretical knowledge related to child, youth and family care, attending activating lectures and completing course assignments independently and in small groups.
I actively participate in the practice classes.
In simulation, I will act responsibly as a member of the nursing team, taking into account patient safety.
I will demonstrate my theoretical knowledge in examinations and group work.
