OS00DX58 Gerontological Nursing (5 cr)
Prerequisites The student has completed at least 120 credits of nursing studies.
Completion of a course in Client-centred care of the elderly (or equivalent competence) and a related placement (or equivalent work experience).
Objectives 1. The student can apply key knowledge and skills needed in gerontological nursing, using reliable, evidence-based knowledge.
2. The student can plan, implement and evaluate the overall care of the gerontological patient/client in an ethical and safe manner, promoting the health and well-being of the older client.
3. The student is able to make decisions and work independently as a gerontological nurse in a multidisciplinary team.
4. The student is able to assess her/his competence and develop her/his own performance in a goal-oriented way.
Content 1. Evidence-based and ethical gerontological care.
2. Client and patient safety.
3. Promoting the health and functional capacity of older people. The content covers nutrition, assessment of functional capacity using the RAI assessment, supporting physical activity and functional capacity, service guidance, supporting mental wellbeing, and the use of technology and robotics in the care of older people.
4. Caring for older people with memory problems.
5. Special issues in nursing care of the elderly, e.g. drug treatment of the elderly, nursing care in emergency care, special features of nursing care for the rehabilitation of the elderly person with sensory impairment.
6. The older client in palliative nursing.
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.
Accomplishment methods The course is delivered entirely online, on the Moodle platform in a non-stop format.
The compulsory deliverables, the computer tests and the numerically assessed assignment, are described on the course's Moodle platform.
Execution methods I develop my skills by studying theoretical knowledge and doing learning tasks and tests independently.
I will study the material covered in the course independently.
I use research and other reliable evidence-based information in the coursework for the assessed assignment.
Materials The learning materials for the course and more detailed information about the implementation can be found in the Moodle learning environment. Students will be able to log in to the learning environment when the teacher responsible for implementation distributes the password for logging in after registration has been accepted.

Further Information The course can also be chosen as an elective. The prerequisites also apply to elective courses.
As a rule, enrolment for the course follows the OUAS enrolment timetable and procedures. Online studies can be completed non-stop, so outside the actual enrolment periods, you can contact the course tutor and he/she will add you to the course.
