OS00DX28 Surgical Nursing (8 cr)
Prerequisites The student has completed the courses (or has equivalent competence):
Basics of Medication Administration,
Basics of Nursing or Basics of Prehospital Emergency Care
Anatomy and Physiology: Part 1: Basic Structures and Functions
Fundamentals of professionalism and health promotion in nursing and midwifery
Objectives The Student
- understands evidence-based surgical patient care at different stages of the perioperative care process.
- remembers the prevalence of the most important diseases requiring surgical treatment, the etiological factors, the symptoms and test findings, the basics of surgical treatment, as well as regional and central anesthesia, and pain management.
- understands the basics of intravenous fluid and drug therapy and the safe administration of blood transfusion.
- remembers the mode of action of the most common analgesics and antimicrobials, the most common adverse reactions and interactions and the specificities of their use.
- understands the principles of nutrition and support for excretion and safe management of wounds.
- performs in a patient-safe manner the essential examination and treatment procedures required in the care of the surgical patient.

The student
- knows the steps of the perioperative care process and justifies care partly based on evidence.
- recognizes some concepts of surgery, some symptoms of common surgical diseases, some findings and some surgical treatments. The student recognizes some forms of anesthesia and anesthetics. The student recognizes some ways of pain management.
- remembers some basic information about the pharmacology of analgesics and antimicrobial drugs.
- knows some of the principles of safe intravenous fluid and drug administration and transfusion.
- knows the principles of nutrition and excretory support and safe wound care.
- performs the examination and treatment necessary for the care of a surgical patient under supervision.

The student
- describes perioperative nursing care comprehensively at all stages of the perioperative nursing process using evidence-based practice.
- identifies key concepts in surgery and anesthesiology. The student describes the symptoms of the most common surgical diseases and names appropriate examinations. The student gives examples of key methods of surgical treatment. The student describes the most common forms of anesthesia and anaesthetics. The student identifies the mechanisms of action and side effects of key anesthetic drugs. The student describes the key methods of pain management.
- remembers the main points about the pharmacology of analgesics and antimicrobial drugs.
- knows the key principles for the safe administration of intravenous fluids, medication and transfusion.
- knows the key principles of nutrition and excretory support and safe delivery of wound care.
- performs examination and treatment procedures required in the care of a surgical patient in a patient-safely guided manner as well as evaluates the effectiveness of the treatment.

The student
- describes perioperative nursing care in a comprehensive and evidence-based manner.
- identifies the concepts of surgery and anesthesiology extensively. The student describes comprehensively with relevant argumentation the relationships between prevalence of surgical diseases, etiological factors, symptoms, test findings, and surgical treatment at various stages of care. The student substantiates the use of different forms of anesthesia and pain management.
- remembers the pharmacology of analgesics and antimicrobials in a versatile manner.
- applies the principles of safe intravenous fluid and drug therapy and transfusion.
- applies the principles of nutrition and excretion support and safe wound care management.
- independently performs the examinations and treatments necessary for the care of a surgical patient, without compromising patient safety, as well as evaluates the effectiveness of the treatment

Further Information - If the student has completed equivalent studies at another university of applied sciences, the course can be approved on the basis of a HOT application and supporting documents.
- If the student has a degree in nursing, part of the classroom exercises can be approved as indicated in the course info. The approval number will be agreed with the teacher in charge of the course at least one week after the info.
- A calculator may not be used for the medical calculus examinations.
