OS00DW80 | Basic Practical Training in Mental Health and Addiction Nursing (6 cr) |
Prerequisites | The practical training in evidence-based nursing (and the theoretical studies required for the training) has been successfully completed. Mental Health and Substance Abuse Nursing (OS00DV98) completed or in progress. |
Objectives | The student - knows the impact for individuals´ wellbeing caused by mental illness and addiction - can evaluate the need for care and support recory. - is able to interact professionally and provide care according to nursing process. - knows the key nursing interventions applied in the unit and conducts a group session among service users. - is able to provide pharmaceutical care safely. - informs about the treatment of individual patient both writing and orally. - follows internship guidelines and work community rules and specific legislation in the field. - recognize the precipitating factors in service users` behaviour and promotes safe care. |
Content | Evaluation of the need for care of people having mental health problems and/or addictions. Nursing interventions in mental health and addiction nursing. Professional interaction with depressed, psychotic, suicidal patients` and people with crisis. Documentation. Pharmaceutical care. Patient and work safety. Mental health act and other legislation in the field. |
Recommended optional programme components | If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan. |
Accomplishment methods | I practise with a sense of purpose, making use of the learning opportunities offered by the training unit. I actively seek guidance to support my learning. I complete the learning tasks included in the traineeship. At the end of the traineeship, I prepare a self-assessment. |

Evaluation Criteria |
pass/fail I assess the patients' needs for care and factors supporting their recovery. I treat patients and their loved ones with respect. I conduct the nursing process using relevant nursing interventions under supervision in the unit. I provide safe medication and I know the psychopharmacology of commonly used drugs in mental health and addiction nursing. I record the nursing process into patient's documents and inform the team verbally. I understand the importance of current legislation governing mental health and addiction nursing, and I work as a student member of the of professional team. I ensure work and patient safety by observing changes in patients' behaviour and following the safety guidelines of the unit. |

Further Information | Full accreditation of prior learning and work experience (AHOT) if the student: - practical nurse, specialization in mental health and substance abuse work and one year of work experience in mental health and/or substance abuse work. Partial admission is only granted in exceptional cases. Apprenticeships, i.e. work placements; the student agrees this with the supervisor before the placement. |
