Description


OS00DW73 Advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing I (5 cr)
Prerequisites The student has completed 120 credits of nursing studies.

The student has completed the first and second semester of studies (or equivalent competence) and internships (or equivalent work experience).

Supporting medical studies have been completed or are being completed in parallel.
Objectives Student
- is able to apply key nursing knowledge and skills required in demanding ward nursing on the basis of evidence.
- is able to plan, implement and evaluate the overall care of a patient, taking into account multidisciplinarity.
- is able to make therapeutic decisions in challenging situation
- is able to identify her/his competences and areas for development.
Content Nursing of neurological patient
Nusing of a person with cancer
Nursing of patients undergoing orthopaedic and plastic surgery
Nursing of Thyroid patient
Nursing of Diabetes patient

Alternative contents:
Intensive fluid- and drug treatment and blood transfusion
Specific features of acute and chronic pain management
Diagnostic tests and procedures
Nutritional management of different patient groups
Specific characteristics of different surgical patient groups
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.
Accomplishment methods Student demonstrates knowledge of pharmaceutical calculation through exams and theory tests, learning tasks, practice lessons and simulation exercises.
Student carries out self- and peer-assessment.
Execution methods Student developes skills by studying theoretical knowledge and doing learning tasks independently and in groups.
Student actively participate in lectures, exercises and simulations.
Student makes use of research and other reliable evidence-based information.

- describes the needs of a patient requiring intensive care. Student use evidence-based knowledge to describe key nursing practices based on the patient's needs. Student makes reasoned judgements about the effectiveness of nursing methods.

- can evaluate own competence and develop own practice in a goal-oriented way.

Student
- describes the evidence-based knowledge and skills required for demanding ward care work.
- describes and anticipates the needs of a patient requiring intensive care. Select the most appropriate evidence-based nursing practice based on the patient's needs. Evaluate the effectiveness of nursing methods in a reasoned manner and highlight alternative approaches.
- makes informed nursing decisions in demanding patient situations and anticipate potential changes.
- presents reasoned solutions to develop my competence.
Assessment Frameworks Not applicable
Further Information Students can take the Advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing I and II in the order they wish, or just the second one.
Students choose the advanced studies in nursing according to their own career plan.
The course may also be chosen as an elective.
The prerequisites also apply to elective courses.
