Description


OS00CG06 Practical Training in Gerontological Nursing (18 cr)
Prerequisites Students must have completed 140 credits.
The student has completed a course in client-centred care of the elderly (or equivalent competence) and the corresponding placement (or equivalent work experience).
Completion of an advanced course in the theory of gerontological nursing, or an equivalent advanced course.
Supporting medical studies have been completed or are being completed in parallel.
Objectives The Student:
Is able to apply the knowledge, skills and decision making of a gerontological nurse in a client-oriented manner in client/patient care.
Is able to act as a nurse in charge of the work unit and as a coordinator of the overall care of the client/patient and as a specialist in gerontological nursing in multidisciplinary teams.
Is able to follow ethical guidelines and principles of nursing and act as a responsible member of the nursing team and community.
Is able to take responsibility for the assessment and development of my own competence and to contribute to the development of the work of the community.
Content The social and individual challenges of health promotion, prevention, rehabilitation and clinical care for older people.
National programmes, recommendations and regulations.
Nurses' expertise and competence in multidisciplinary promotion and care of older people's well-being.
Evidence-based care for older people and its development.
Guidance, teaching and creative activities and clinical skills in the care of older people.
Welfare technologies.
Current specific issues in care of the elderly.
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.
Accomplishment methods I set learning objectives for the traineeship before the traineeship
I do the learning tasks for the placement
I will use the medication passport
Complete a self-assessment during the placement (based on the objectives of the placement) at the end of the placement
Execution methods I will develop my skills by working in the placement, taking advantage of a wide range of learning opportunities.
I acquire and use evidence-based knowledge.
I actively collect feedback on my development and skills and, if necessary, modify my activities based on the feedback I receive.

Further Information Students choose their advanced studies in nursing according to their own career plan. It is worthwhile to find out in advance what educational and skills requirements employers have defined for nurses in different workplaces.

You can book a placement yourself on Jobiil or by other means.
Possible gerontological nursing placements:
- Hospital, health centre: inpatient wards, emergency departments
- Home nursing, home care, home hospital
- Home care, home health care, hospital, home rehabilitation team, etc., home health centre (Oulu), home rehabilitation team, etc.
- Training in the job description of a memory coordinator/memory nurse
- Memory counselling/senior counselling
- Service counselling unit

The course in gerontological nursing can also be chosen as an elective course. The prerequisites also apply to elective courses.
