Description
OM00CA07 | Physical Optics (4 cr) |
Prerequisites | Participation in the OM00CA06 Geometrical Optics. |
Objectives | The candidates should demonstrate fundamental knowledge and insight into physical optics in order for the candidate to be able to understand and solve problems related to the eye and optical instruments/lenses, their function and correction. Knowledge and understanding should be demonstrated in the areas of: (1) wave optics, (2) interaction of light on matter, (3) polarization, (4) image quality. The aim is to achieve knowledge of the fundamentals of physical optics and how they apply to the human eye. |
Content | Wave optics (Characteristics of wave motion, Classifications of the electromagnetic spectrum, Total and partial coherence, Diffraction (single slit, circular aperture, limits of resolution, zone plates), Interference (double slit, multiple slits, thin film, antireflective coatings, holography) Scattering (Rayleigh compared to Tyndall), Dispersion. Interaction of light and matter (Atomic energy levels, absorption and emission line spectra Continuous spectra (Black body radiator and gray body radiator characteristics), Fluorescence (photons, energy levels), Lasers (theory of operation, speckle pattern), Spectral transmission)). Polarization (Linearly polarized light, Circular and elliptical polarization, Polarization by reflection (glare reduction, Brewster's law), Effects of scattering on polarization, Transmission through successive polarizers (stress analysis, Malus' law)). Image Quality (Resolving power, Point and line spread function, Modulation transfer function (Fourier optics)), |
Recommended optional programme components | If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan. |
Accomplishment methods | Participation in practical class. Approval of practical tasks. Final exam |

Evaluation Criteria |
satisfactory (1-2) You can identify terms, ranges and units related to the topics of physical optics. You know individual phenomena of physical optics and use the theory to describe and solve some basic problems. good (3-4) You can describe the basic principles of physical optics and you can use your knowledge to describe the problems and solve the tasks that have been given. excellent (5) You are able to explain the basic principles of physical optics and to use your knowledge to solve the problems and tasks that have been given in a variety of ways. You assess the appropriateness of the methods you use on a theoretical basis in situations in your profession. |
