Optometrist is a health care profession that is
autonomous and regulated (i.e. licensed and
registered). The optometrist is a health care
professional trained to provide primary eye care
services.
The optometrist is an independent primary
health care professional who specialises in eye
examination and prescribing spectacles and contact lenses. He also contributes to treatment, management and prevention of disorders in the visual system, the eye and associated structures as well as the analysis of related systemic conditions. Optometrists are allowed to prescribe spectacles
and contact lenses to their patients and they are also responsible for dispensing spectacle lens
prescriptions. The studies are widely based on
optometry and thus expertise in mathematics, medicine, health technology and business is emphasized. The training consists of lectures and different quided practicals. One vital part of training is a supervised training in optical shops. Also some basics of international contacts and R&D are included.
