MM00EI77 Orchestration (3 cr)

Objectives I know the specific characteristics of playing the most common orchestral instruments and can take them into account in my own playing and orchestration tasks. I can orchestrate satz according to style for the most common classical ensembles, such as string quartet and orchestra, chamber orchestra, symphony and symphony orchestra.
Content - Instrument theory (basic information): Instrument families; Score order; A brief history of the instrument; The structure of the instrument and the basics of sound formation; Fundamentals of playing technique (e.g. playing position); Writing for the instrument (e.g. vocal range, transpositions, claves, most common playing techniques).
- Playing and orchestration (applicable information): The student writes his own playing and orchestration exercises, for which the teacher gives feedback before the final assignment. The final assignment of the course is a larger orchestration assignment for a large orchestra.
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.

Evaluation Criteria

pass/fail
The evaluation (pass/fail) is based on the course assignments and an independently assembled orchestration portfolio.

Accepted: The student shows through his own portfolio that he has learned to write credibly for different compositions. The orchestration written by the student demonstrates the mastery of writing for various instruments related to the knowledge of playing instruments, as well as musical problem-solving ability.
