Objectives | I can write Bach-style two- and three-part counterpoint and analyze a contrapuntal harmony and voice-leading via controlling the melodic lines. I master various tools of contrapuntal writing and understand how they relate to musical style and expression. I understand a polyphonic musical weave as a stylistic entity formed by different elements, and I can solve various problems related to harmony and voice-leading. I can write my own two- and three-part melodies. |
Content | - A stylistic imitation of Bach-style counterpoint; 2- and 3-voice counterpoint; 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1 counterpoint. - Writing a melody line; Melodic tendencies of major and minor scales; Forbidden melodic movements; Phrasal thinking and musical climax; Balancing leaps and scale movements; Balancing ascending and descending lines; Melodic ranges. - Melody processing techniques: imitation - inversion, retrograde, diminution, augmentation and stretto; motivic variation – rhythmic variation, interval variation, lengthening and shortening of the motif; ornamentation - Imitative forms: invention and fugue - Counterpoint as a tool for harmony and voice-leading (tonal and post-tonal) |

pass/fail The assessment (pass/fail) is based on doing homework and portfolio. Passed: Through his own counterpoint portfolio, the student demonstrates that they have learned to write Bach-style counterpoint convincingly. The counterpoint written by the student demonstrates mastery of stylistic imitation related to harmony and voice-leading skills and musical problem-solving ability. |
