Objectives | I can analyze rhythm music both by ear and via score-reading. I recognize different musical forms and I can analyze their structures, harmony and the techniques used by the composer. I can describe the melodic motive phenomena of music and phenomena related to tonality and modality. I recognize characteristics from which a unified musical entity emerges, as well as stylistic features that connect with specific cultural-historical context. I understand harmony, form and style analysis as a tool for building my own musical expression. |
Content | Understanding musical structures; Understanding how the musical entity forms in a piece; Identifying the significant moments of the piece and observing the structure the music (e.g. related to texture, chords, homophony or polyphony, repeating gestures and structures); Tonal functions; Reading score (e.g. key, cadences, modulations); Musical textures (e.g. harmonic and inharmonic tones); Assessment of need for analytical precision. The course focuses on the history of Western music, especially on the music of 17th and 19th centuries. |

Accomplishment methods | Participation in contact teaching. Absences need to be compensated by additional homework. Other ways of completing the course must always be negotiated with the teacher. |
