Objectives | Student has an understanding of the basics of harmony and voice leading. Student recognizes the most common small-scale forms in tonal music and has the ability to write tonal harmony (4-part voice leading). |
Content | Common studies: Introduction to acoustics; Overtone series; Functionality; Cadence in tonal music; 4-part voice leading; Types of modulation; Dissonance and consonance; Modes. Classical music students: Harmony and counterpoint in 16th to 20th century style. Pop&jazz students: Improvisation; the different modes of the 4 diatonic scales; Modes in relation to chord and key. Blues tonality. |
