MA00BT20 Music Theory 1 (4 cr)
Prerequisites No prerequisites needed.
Objectives Student has an understanding of the basics of harmony and voice leading. Student recognizes the most common small-scale forms in tonal music and has the ability to write tonal harmony (4-part voice leading).
Content Common studies: Introduction to acoustics; Overtone series; Functionality; Cadence in tonal music; 4-part voice leading; Types of modulation; Dissonance and consonance; Modes.

Classical music students: Harmony and counterpoint in 16th to 20th century style.

Pop&jazz students: Improvisation; the different modes of the 4 diatonic scales; Modes in relation to chord and key. Blues tonality.
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.
