Description

AM00CR09 Introduction to creative Instrumentation (5 cr)
Prerequisites Not applicable
Objectives The students learn to transcribe music into their own instruments as well as for different small chamber ensembles/ensemble (of their own instrument family). As a music pedagogue you need to know how to quickly transcribe small pieces for instruments available (e.g. for your own teaching groups or pupils studying in small music institutions having a limited number of instruments and in which especially players of the same instrument are highly represented and ready-made material are not available) and/or for ensembles of different instruments of your own instrument family.
Content In the study unit you practise how to write for different instruments, the main focus is on writing for your own instrument as well as producing pedagogical material through instrumentation/arrangement. Also writing easy arrangements, for example, a Christmas song arrangement, are practiced.
The study unit is divided into two modules; 1) the basic knowledge, i.e. orchestration, and 2) the applied section; the basics of instrumentation and arranging.
A. Orchestration (basic knowledge): Instrument Families; Scores; Brief History of the Instrument; Structure/Construction of the Instrument and Basics of Sound Generation; Basics of the Playing Technique (e.g. the playing position); and Writing for the Instrument (e.g. ambitus, transpositions, claves, the most common playing techniques). The instruments of most common symphony orchestras and big band ensembles are introduced in the course.
B. The basics of instrumentation and arrangement (applied knowledge): The students will independently familiarize themselves with the instrumentation and arrangement examples on Moodle learning environment. The students write their own instrumentation and arrangement exercises, from which they receive feedback before the final assignment. The final assignment of the study unit is a wider instrumentation or arrangement for a small chamber music group or an ensemble.
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.
Accomplishment methods The students independently study the orchestration part on Moodle learning environment and perform small exercises especially related to their own instrument/their own instrument family. The applied part is studied with the help of the examples on Moodle and by writing their own instrumentations and arrangements.
