Curricula
Description
AM00CR00 | Introduction to Composing - Tools for Music Pedagogues (5 cr) |
Prerequisites | Participation requires good playing and sight reading skills as well as basic knowledge of music theory. The Key is your motivation, interest in composing and developing your own composition skills |
Objectives | The aim of the study unit and the including digital study material is to provide tools for future and working music teachers as well as musicians to understand what creative possibilities of the renewed curricula of music institutions give and require from instrumental studies. The curricula strongly focus on composing, improvisation and keyboard accompaniment, and the two first mentioned are included in this study unit. The study material emphasizes both on a practical and a pedagogical approach. |
Content | This online study unit is primarily aimed at music teachers and future music teachers at music institutions but is also suitable e.g. for choir conductors, church musicians etc. The content focuses on the basics of composing based on Western art music (so-called classical music) and the subject matters studied are applicable to both instrumental and vocal music. The use of note writing programs or other subject matters related to music technology are not included in this study unit. The assignments of the study unit can be notated either in writing, by a notation software or neatly by hand. The ensemble consists of an initial assignment and three modules of one (1) credit and the final work, 2 credits. |
Recommended optional programme components | If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan. |
Accomplishment methods | In the initial assignment students plan their objectives for their final work. The final work may be an independent composition intended for teaching purposes or, for example, a compilation of studies or exercises. After defining the objectives, the contents of the modules can be to the extent possible designed so that they support the final work. Each module has its own subject matter dealt with the assignments from the perspectives of analysis, improvisation and composing. The analysis assignments will study music examples for the subject matter in question. In the improvisation assignments, the same issues are studied through improvisation, and in the composition part the students will work out a notated version. The different perspectives of the assignments will support each other, and it is often good to concurrently work on things from different perspectives. |
Execution methods | The study unit is carried out independently based on online material (written and visual materials). Feedback is provided when submitting the assignments, and there will be return schedules for each assignment. The study unit is completed after all the assignments have been accomplished successfully. The study unit will be graded: pass or fail. |
