Description


OK00BW10 Midwifery Care of Mother and Family during Childbirth (5 cr)
Prerequisites Student has completed at least 140 CR in nursing degree programs.
Objectives Student
1)
- understands the physiology of childbirth and possible deviations.
- understands the significance of childbirth experience to the well-being of a woman, newborn and the whole family.
2)
- knows the evidence-based monitoring, guidance, examination and care methods during childbirth
- knows how to create safe and reliable collaboration with the woman and family during childbirth in a individualized and family-centered way
3)
- can anticipate and identify situations of low-risk births turning into high-risk birth
- can independently and safely handle low-risk childbirths and knows how to act as a member of interprofessional team during high-risk childbirth
4)
- can evaluate newborn's condition and take care of newborns. Recognizes changes in newborn's well-being and is able to act in such situations
- is able to support early bonding between the newborn and mother/ family
Content 1) Physiological child birth
2) Midwifery skills in Low-risk child births
3) Midwifery skills in High-risk child births
4) Care and monitoring of the newborn, Early bonding
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.
Accomplishment methods I will demonstrate my competence through learning tasks and tests (e.g. medication management skills, CTG test and other tasks, learning diary and course exam), which I will use to assess and demonstrate my own competence.
Execution methods I will develop my skills by acquiring knowledge about midwifery for women in labour and families, by working independently and in small groups on course assignments, and by practicing in skills workshops and simulation exercises.

Evaluation Criteria satisfactory (1-2)
Student can identify and define the phenomena and basic concepts related to midwifery for women in labour and the family.
Student is familiar with different types of midwifery practices during childbirth, but cannot justify the choices. Theoretical knowledge is narrow and limited.

good (3-4)
Student can justify what she/he has learned based on theoretical knowledge of midwifery for women and families.
Student can describe and apply causal relationships between phenomena and concepts related to midwifery during childbirth.
Student can reflect on what she/he has learned in the context of practical examples.

excellent (5)
Student can relate and apply theoretical knowledge to the professional context of midwifery for women and families in labour and delivery. Student understands the issues involved in antenatal midwifery and the cause and effect relationships between them.
Student knows how to evaluate and justify different options for midwifery solutions in the perinatal period using applied examples.
