Midwives provide expert care on sexual and reproductive health; during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum period. Midwifes are specialized to work with women, healthy newborns and families including also care of gynecological patients. Sexual counselling and family planning as well as guidance and support of parents is part of midwifery care.
Good communication and teamwork skills are important when working with women and families during different situations in life. Midwives can work in preventive health care, health care centers, hospitals, different organizations and as a private entrepreneur. Midwives can provide independent care in low risk deliveries and in case of high risk deliveries they work with a interprofessional team. Midwifes work also on different out-patient clinics and hospital wards. In Northern Finland the specific questions in midwifery are grand multipara births, health challenges of migrant patients and also long distances to hospitals.
Midwifery and nursing studies include a lot of training in skills labs and in simulation in school and also supervised practical training in hospitals and health centers in Finland. Theoretical studies are mainly independent studies, web-based courses and seminars. A student exchange abroad and different project works can be recognized as part of the studies. Nursing studies are partly interprofessional, including courses with medical students.
Practical training in midwifery studies is regulated through European Directive. Sufficient competency and required midwifery skills are tested by written and practical exams. Passed exams are a requirement for continuation of studies. The midwifery student needs to be responsible of his/her studies. Activity, organized planning and ability to make independent decisions is also required.
