Prerequisites Suitable for all health and social care students, but it is easier to learn if the student has some experiences of working with people needing assistance in transfers.
Objectives The student is able to:
- Define the basic principles of ergonomics, identify risk factors that contribute to musculoskeletal disorders and to explain physical load
- Understand and observe how patient is changing his/her body positions based on his/her natural movements and how motor skills can be practiced and learnt
- Plan and conduct a patient handling procedure based on patient’s natural movements what allow him/her to use his/her optimal functional capacity.
- Choose the proper transfer technique/s and assistive device/s depending on the patient's functional level.
- Utilize different transfer techniques and assistive devices to assure the safety for both the patient and the assistant.
- Communicate with other professionals, staff, caregivers and patients before and during patient handling, using different communication styles and resources in order to perform safe patient handling.
- Integrate ethical reasoning point of view in patient handling situations.
Content Basics of ergonomics. Risk assessment. Natural movement and functional capacity of a patient. Body awareness and motor learning. Biomechanics in patient handling. Patient handling principles and management policies. Ethics and communication during patient handling.
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.
Accomplishment methods The course consist of virtual and intensive part.
