E700BR44 Social and Psychological Emergencies (4 cr)
Prerequisites Basics of Prehospital Emergency Care and Ethics, Health and Social Services and Health Promotion in Future
Objectives Student is able to recognize the immediate need of social support of emergency patient. Student in familiar with the obligations of cooperation of authorities in social emergencies. Student is able to help or advise clients in applying for social services.


Student can describe the basics of crisis psychology. He/she can act in crises situations in a professional way and give immediate psychological support when necessary. The student can describe the different stages of crisis of persons experiencing traumatic crisis. He/she recognizes the possibility of being experiencing a vicarious trauma. He/she knows the principles of self-help, and how to get professional help.
Content Urgent and non-urgent social emergencies, regognizing the need for help. Social emergency services. Interventions aimed at providing social support in acute setting. Frequent users with multiple problems of emergency services. The need for interprofessional cooperation.

Basics of crisis psychology. The process of traumatic crisis. Post-traumatic stress reactions. Onset of mental trauma. Grief work / trauma work. Children and traumatic crisis. Stages of recovery. Psychosocial help. Helping the helper. Resources for recovery.
