The goal of the Degree Programme in Emergency Care is to educate experts to provide advanced level prehospital emergency care. Students will graduate as Paramedics and Registered Nurses. Paramedics are independent practitioners working in their specific level of competence, with patients of all ages. Graduates are capable to utilize their advanced knowledge and skills independently to respond their patients` individual needs. Paramedics apply their professional judgement and experience to make clinical decisions and explain and justify these decisions when challenged.

Paramedics have ability to deal appropriately situations with uncertainty, unpredictability and change. They treat patients on scene; and when necessary, during transportation to the hospital. In rural and remote communities of northern Finland the paramedics’ role is expanding to provide non-urgent examinations and care. Paramedics also provide self-management advice; and where available and appropriate, to refer to other health services. Paramedics have ability to work in partnership with patients, other professionals and authorities. They are commissioned to perform various duties requiring scene managing, organizing, educational and developmental skills. Graduated paramedics are committed to practice within the legal and ethical boundaries of their profession.

During their education, paramedic students initially familiarize themselves with multidisciplinary knowledge and skills required in nursing and prehospital emergency care. The role of a paramedic is changing rapidly. Increasing medical technology and public awareness of advanced health care issues have had a significant impact upon the delivery of prehospital emergency care. Paramedics are able to apply their professional competencies both rural and urban environments. Most of the graduates find jobs in emergency ambulance services, accident and emergency rooms or intensive care units.

The structure of the studies is including theoretical instruction, simulations, workshops, skill exercises and assignments that enhance professional and academic skills. The practical training consists of at least 75 credit points. Practical training occurs under the supervision of expert paramedics, nurses and lecturers. In different practice environments the students expand the knowledge and skills they have studied at the school. Practical training may include simulations, projects or written assignments.
