| Objectives | The student understands both protective and risk factors that affect mental health. He/she understands the health and psychological consequences of psychic disease, use of intoxicants and crisis and the ways to cope. The student has an insight into the helping interaction characteristics in the care of a depressed, psychotic and suicidal patient. The student knows intoxicant dependencies and the nature of traumatic crisis as well as methods of nursing interaction in the care of persons suffering from intoxicant dependencies and when working with persons in crises. The student knows the core of mental health and substance abuse legislation. |
| Content | Part I: Psychiatric care. Mental health and protective and risk factors. Stress vulnerability. Psychotic, depressed and suicidal patient and the need for care. Helping interaction and discussion in the care of a psychiatric patient: experience of depression, helping a patient cope with depression, recognition of suicide risk in patients and care, experience of psychosis and care for psychotic patients. Helping practises in psychiatric care; care for patients suffering from schizophrenia and depression. Legislation on psychiatric care and ethical issues. Part II: Substance abuse prevention. Substance dependency; dignity at work; substance abuse; mini-intervention and motivation. Substance abuse legislation. Part III: Crisis work. Traumatic crisis. Grief work. Trauma work. Mental trauma. Psychosocial coping and resources. |
