7E00BR35 Basics of Prehopsital Emergency Care and Ethics (9 cr)

Objectives The student gets familiar with the history of prehospital emergency care and nursing and the basics of evidence based work. He/she understands the importance of reliable research to nursing and paramedic practice. The student has knowledge of ethical principles which govern decision making in the field of health and social care. He/she recognises problem situations and reflects on his/her own solutions at work.
Student has knowledge of proficiency requirements for prehospital emergency care and acute nursing, core concepts, prehospital emergency services and legislation. Students will become familiar with the basics of person centered prehospital care and the chain of care of the emergency patient. Student demonstrates ability to carry out patient examination systematically, give first respond level help and make simple nursing interventions taking into consideration interaction skills in the care of emergency and acutely ill patients. Student can describe the basic principles of patient and work safety in prehospital emergency care. Student is able to justify the meaning of communication and self assessment skills in studying emergency care.
Content History of prehospital emergency care and nursing in Finland and abroad. Evidence-based practice, reliable evidence and clinical expertise.
Prehospital emergency care and acute nursing as a part of care chain and nursing process. Introduction of emergency services. Responsibility; teamwork and pair work. Legislation affecting prehospital emergency care. Five steps of examination of ill and injured patients, ABCDE; consultation and decision making. Assessment of primary respond, ongoing assessment. Transportation of patient. Basics of documentation and transmission of information in prehospital emergency care and acute nursing.
Ethical theories. Values and norms as the basis of an ethical practice. Ethical decision making. Ethics in prehospital emergency care and nursing.
