7E00BN34 Basics of Emergency Medicine and Resuscitation (5 cr)
Prerequisites The student has gained basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Basics of Prehospital Emergency Care and Ethics.
Objectives Student has knowledge of the most common diseases requiring emergency care, alterations in vital signs and body functions affected by the diseases. Student is able to apply the medical knowledge into emergency care practise. Student familiarizes him/herself with emergency medication at basic level. The student is able to deal with medicolegal matters in emergency care situations at basic level.

Student is capable to stay up to date of the latest emergency medicine and resuscitation research findings. Student is able to apply CPR and ALS techniques and protocols in rehearsal situations. Student is capable to apply CRM principles in different roles of resuscitation team.
Content Medical leadership of emergency care. Pharmacology in prehospital emergency care. Cardiogenic and pulmonary diseases. Impairment of consciousness. Exceptional concentration of blood sugar. Intubation and fluid therapy. Poisonings and overdosage of medicines. Effects of trauma on the body; mechanism of injuries and typical injuries. Emergency care of trauma patients. Cardiac muscle: chemistry; cardiac arrhythmia. Pain management in basic level emergency care. Neurological patients. Patients with abdominal pain. Emergency care of paediatric patients. Medicolegal matters in emergency care. Evidence based resuscitation skills and techniques. BLS, ALS, ROSC. Applying CRM priciples in resuscitation team performance and leadership behavior.
