7E00BM52 The Basics of Clinical Nursing (10 cr)
Prerequisites No prerequisites needed.
Objectives Student learns to provide a safe nursing environment to a patient. He/she learns to recognize the patient`s needs for nursing, as well as plan, implement and assess nursing care in a patient-centered manner. Student respects the principles of nursing care at work, makes decisions and gives both oral and written information. Student can assist and counsel patient in carrying out their daily activities. He/she understands the characteristics of professional communication.

Student demonstrates ability to recognize changes in the activities of life used in the initial assessment of a patient and has an understanding of care requirements necessary to meet the patient's specific needs relative to each activity. Student is able to apply his/her knowledge of aseptic techniques to nursing practice. Student is able to integrate and apply theoretical knowledge with clinical nursing practice. Student is able to work in the nursing team member or a leader in a simulation environment. Student is motivated to develop communication and assessment skills.
Content Provision of a safe nursing environment, and a nurse¿s responsibility as a member of an interprofessional team. Assistance and counselling provided in carrying out daily activities. Basics of prevention of infections; Basics of ergonomy. The most common laboratory examinations, and patient instructions. Professional communication in nursing. Nurse`s ethical and legal responsibilities. Principles of nursing care, and primary nursing. Evidence-based nursing care. Addressing patients` spiritual needs. Nursing care records and nursing care plans. Oral and written information.

Recognition of respiratory insufficiency.Recognition of insufficiency in blood circulation; follow-up with invasive measurements. Pharmacological therapy and blood products. Enteral and parenteral nutrition. Intravenous drug and fluid therapy. Recognition of excretion problems; interventions, e.g. urinary tract catheterization, treatment of constipation and care of stoma patients. Wound care, skin disinfection. The importance of body temperature. Radiological examinations and radiation safety. High quality medical care of dying patients and their families.
