7E00BH50 Advanced Competencies in Acute Nursing (9 cr)
Prerequisites The student has passed the Clinical Nursing course and practical training in Acute Nursing. The student has completed studies of basic level prehospital emergency nursing.
Objectives Student can justify factors influencing well-being of pediatric, gynecological and obstetric patient and analyse ethical challenges of their care. Student can evaluate pediatric, gynecological and obstetric patient’s basic vital signs and understand the significance of information gained by patient observation and monitoring systems. Student is able to utilize evidence based decision making in choosing appropriate emergency nursing actions during pregnancy, childbirth, neonatal period and in gynecological patient´s care. Student has ability to use appropriate nursing interventions in acute care of children, adolescents and their families. Student has knowledge of medications used in pediatric, gynecological and obstetric practice, and ability to calculate drug doses correctly.

Student can analyse ethical challenges which emerge in anaesthetic nursing and intensive care. Student is able to evaluate patient’s basic vital signs during anaesthesia and intensive care and understand the significance of information gained by patient observation and monitoring systems. Student is capable to make conclusions and justified decisions of the vital functions of intensive care patient and of the changes which take place in them. Student can plan, implement and evaluate patient’s anaesthetic nursing and intensive care in a client-oriented way based on researched information, recommendations and the good protocols and patient safety. Student is able to apply technical and CRM-skills. Student can justify the most common medicines used in anaesthesia and in intensive care, their indication for use, action mechanisms, side-effects, contraindications and dosage.
Content The knowledge base and methods of family-centered maternal and pediatric nursing. Nursing care during pregnancy, labor and birth. Postpartum and newborn. Assisting of the childbirth in pre hospital conditions. Special features of the healthy newborn`s care and gynecological nursing. Normal growth and developement of the child. The impact of an illness, acute or chronic, to the child, adolescent and the family. Assessment of the child. Procedures and treatments. Taking care of pain. Special concerns in emergency nursing of pediatric, gynecological and obstetric patient. Special features of pediatric, gynecological and obstetric medication care. Documentation.

Nursing staff, interprofessional teams and proficiency requirements of anaesthesia and intesive care. Ethical challenges in nursing of the intensive care patient and anaesthetic nursing. Client-oriented nursing process. Patients undergoing surgery with general anaesthesia or anaesthetization. Methods of giving the patient an anaesthetic drug. Follow-up of and caring for the patient during anaesthesia. Recovery from anaesthesia and nursing in recovery room. Nursing care documentation. The safe patient transfer. Nursing environment and technology in intensive care unit. Critical pulmonary insufficiency and blood circulation deficit and taking care of them. Administering intravenous fluids and medications, medical treatment, nutrition, excretion, sleep and rest and taking care of them. Multiprofessional teamwork in responding to life-threatening situations. Communication and interaction with intensive care patient and relatives.
