Description


O1001BA Basics of Cell Biology, Biochemistry and Genetics (5 cr)
Prerequisites No prerequisites needed.
Objectives The student has knowledge of the structures of cells and cell organelles, their functions and regulating systems. The student familiarizes him/herself with biomolecules, their structures and protein synthesis. The student acquires understanding of the chemical reactions of cell metabolism and their regulation. The student has a general view of the human genotype, its functions and changes.
Content Basic cell types, special characteristics and structures. The structure and function of the cell membrane, and the extracellular matrix. Cell division. The function and regulation of genes and protein synthesis. The structure and metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, enzymes, nucleic acids and lipids. Clinically important metabolites. Genetic code and regularity in inheritance. Gamete division. Changes in genotype. Finnish disease inheritance. Diagnostics of familial diseases and developmental disorders. Ethical issues. Biobank concept.
