The area of Oulu is well known of its biomedical know-how. Oulu University of Applied Sciences has the only degree programme in Northern Finland which educates Biomedical Laboratory Scientists. During the biomedical laboratory education students are trained to manage laboratory processes, taking in account development of health care and laboratories in Northern Finland.
During your studies you will learn to understand human physiology and meaning of laboratory analyses in supporting health, diagnosis of diseases and evaluation of treatment effectiveness. You will be able to manage laboratory processes by studying customer-oriented sample taking, analyzing samples and evaluating the results according to the laboratory quality system.
In the Degree Programme in Biomedical Laboratory Science students achieve Batchelor¿s Degree of Health Care, Biomedical Laboratory Scientist. The right to practice as a licensed Biomedical Laboratory Scientist (Medical Laboratory Technologist) is granted by the National Authority for Medicolegal Affairs.
Biomedical Laboratory Scientists work in laboratories of primary health care and hospitals, biomedical research groups and production units, and in environmental laboratories. They are also recruited to commercial companies on laboratory and health care trade.
Your main tasks as a Biomedical Laboratory Scientist are customer service, sample taking, point-of-care testing, sample analyzing and evaluation of the results. You will participate in the quality management of the laboratory services and will develop the laboratory services. You will also participate in teaching and guiding concerning reliability and validity of the laboratory analyses.
In many tasks you will need technical know-how and manual skills. Using microscopy requires visual skills and ability to differentiate colours and structures.In the Degree Programme in Biomedical Laboratory Science there are no options, but with your personal study curriculum you can deepen your competences in different fields of Biomedical Laboratory Sciences. You can get familiar with laboratory processes abroad, too. Also with your Bachelor¿s Thesis you can deepen your knowledge in the field you will choose. Very often these Theses are made with external collaborators.
In the beginning of your studies you will start to make your own competence portfolio. It will help you with your studies and in your professional development, and you can also use it later on while searching work.
