Master's degree in Engineering (MEng), Printed Intelligence

In the Master’s Degree Programme the student will familiarize oneself with designing and applying of printed intelligence. The printed technology is utilized in more and more fields, such as construction, automotive and healthcare technologies. Printed intelligence is used e.g. in sensors, rapid diagnostics, control panels and smart clothes. Studies are mostly carried out online, with only one intensive period when contact teaching is organized at Linnanmaa campus in Oulu.

The language of instruction is English and studies can mainly be carried out flexibly as online learning within 1-2 years, which enables working at the same time. The studies include a practical contact learning period where the student can develop one’s designing skills and produce printed electronics at PrinLab of Oulu University of Applied Sciences. The Degree Programme includes a 30-credit Master’s thesis, which will be started at the beginning of the studies. Studies can also be oriented towards the requirements of the thesis.

Printed Intelligence is growing in the Oulu region

In Oulu the possibilities of printed electronics have been studied since the late 1990s. During the recent years, several companies, which apply printed electronics in different application areas and in production, have started their operations. Developing technologies will create new business opportunities and there is a shortage of specialists of this field all over Finland. Currently, the growing area is, especially, the printed electronics which is integrated into structures.

In the Oulu region the operators are PrintoCent, a development Cluster of VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, University of Oulu, Oulu University of Applied Sciences and several companies, and the PrinLab test laboratory of Oulu University of Applied Sciences. The Degree Programme of Printed Intelligence will produce multidisciplinary experts to meet the needs of the companies, especially for product development and production. During the education, the student can participate in local training and seminars with the people working in this field.

Study contents – Blended learning

The education will proceed practically and flexibly in the online learning environment. The studies are mostly carried out as online courses. The student can do learning tasks flexibly on one’s own time. During the contact lesson week, the student will familiarize with production methods and test how their own plan work in practice. The thesis will be done company-oriented so that the student will either acquire the topic or combine the development task with one’s own work. This will enable the student to design, test and implement a development project which meets the real needs. The student will also develop oneself as an independent innovator.

After graduating, the student can work as a specialist in product development, projects and in production. The title can be e.g. product development manager, project manager or production manager.

Some parts of this Degree Programme can also be studied based on the right to study in Open University of Applied Sciences. As a student of Oulu University of Applied Sciences, the student can utilize free of charge the online courses offered by Open University of Applied Sciences or CampusOnline. Post-graduate studies are offered both by the School of Professional Teacher Education at Oulu University of Applied Sciences and the faculties of University of Oulu.
