7Y00BH11 | Ergonomic Patient Handling (3 cr) |
Prerequisites | It is recommendable to have some experience of working in hospital, geriatric homes etc, to be able to understand what kind of limitations in functional capacity and locomotion there can appear. |
Objectives | The student is able to explain basic principles of ergonomic patient transfers and am able to apply them in practice. He/she recognizes his/her own postures and movements and is able to utilize that knowledge in patient transfer situations. The student knows and is able to use the most common devices while helping the patient to move himself. He/she recognizes risk features in patient transfers and his/her work at hospital ward settings. The student understands that rehabilitative aspect is an essential part of ergonomic working. He/she knows laws defining safety in work and is able to make his/her own work more safe. |
Content | Ergonomy and safety during patient transfers. Body awareness and natural movements as a basis for good ergonomy at work. Considering patient resources while helping him to move himself. Devises for patient handling and transfers. Laws focused on safety. Cognitive ergonomy. |

satisfactory (1-2) The student's skills and performing is evaluated according to criteria done for the Ergonomic Patient Handling Passport, which is administrated by the Finnish Institute for Occupational Health (FIOH) and is published in Moodle. Passport is available to students gaining at least grade H3. Details of criteria are set by FIOH and can be found in moodle. good (3-4) H3: Safe knowledge and skills H4: Good knowledge and skills excellent (5) Excellent knowledge and skills |
