ON00DV67 Sustainable Nursing Practice (5 cr)
Prerequisites This course requires time management and good English language skills.
Objectives The student is able to:

• identify the six defining attributes of sustainability in nursing;
• discuss hazardous exposures in healthcare facilities among nurses;
• develop methods to reduce medicine waste using evidence-based practice;
• recognise the role of nurses in the climate change movement;
• discuss health-related illnesses caused by climate change; and
• distinguish the difference between upstream and downstream policies to strengthen policies in environmental health.
Content • Six attributes of sustainability in nursing
• Hazardous exposures among nurses in healthcare facilities
• Pharmaceutical waste and reducing medicine waste
• United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 3, SDG 6 and SDG 17
• Relationship of Climate Change to Mental Health, Respiratory Diseases, Cardiovascular Diseases
• International organizations in nursing dealing with climate change
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.

Execution methods The course is entirely online.

• Provides a thorough and accurate discussion of hazardous exposures in healthcare facilities and their impact on nurses.
• Successfully develops evidence-based methods to reduce medicine waste and explains their effectiveness.
• Demonstrates a clear understanding of the role of nurses in the climate change movement and provides relevant examples.
• Provides a comprehensive discussion on health-related illnesses caused by climate change and their impact on individuals and communities.
• Accurately distinguishes and explains the difference between upstream and downstream policies and their significance in strengthening environmental health policies.

FAIL

• Incorrectly identifies or does not accurately describe the six defining attributes of sustainability in nursing.
• Provides an incomplete or inaccurate discussion of hazardous exposures in healthcare facilities and their impact on nurses.
• Does not develop evidence-based methods to reduce medicine waste, or the methods proposed lack effectiveness or evidence.
• Demonstrates a lack of understanding or provides inaccurate information regarding the role of nurses in the climate change movement.
• Provides an incomplete or inaccurate discussion on health-related illnesses caused by climate change.
• Incorrectly distinguishes or does not accurately explain the difference between upstream and downstream policies in environmental health.
