ON00DV49 Clinical Practicum in Gerontological Nursing (8 cr)
Prerequisites Level I and Level II studies are ongoing or completed without deficits. Students with a previous background in the care of elderly people will be supplemented with advanced requirements and criteria.
Objectives The student is able to:

• master the key knowledge and skills required for gerontological nursing, work independently and make decisions as a nurse;
• plan, implement and evaluate gerontological nursing work ethically and safely using reliable evidence-based information;
• work as a part of the gerontological nursing team, as a responsible nurse in the work unit, and as a coordinator of overall care for the client;
• perform tasks in a multidisciplinary team as an expert in gerontological nursing; and
• evaluate own skills and develop his or her own professional skills in a goal-oriented manner.
Content • Social and individual challenges of health promotion, prevention, rehabilitation, and clinical care for older people
• National programmes, recommendations, and regulations
• Nurses' expertise and competence in multidisciplinary promotion and care of older people's well-being
• Evidence-based care for older people and its development.
• Guidance, teaching and creative activities, and clinical skills in the care of older people.
• Welfare technologies
• Current specific issues in the care of the elderly
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.

Evaluation Criteria

pass/fail
A student is assessed according to the Assessment Framework of the Oulu University of Applied Sciences (Oamk). Areas of assessment include 1. professional knowledge base and information seeking; 2. professional skill, activity, and target of activity; 3. group work skills and leadership; and 4. responsibility. Detailed information on the assessment is attached.


PASS

The student:

• achieves the objectives of the clinical practicum and as assessed by the clinical mentor in the clinical placement(s);
• performs clinical nursing tasks safely and independently under the supervision of the clinical mentor;
• participates in pre-deployment orientation(s), meetings with the clinical supervisor, collaborative activities(as needed) and adheres to the standards of nursing care ethically and with due diligence;
• submits the required assignments according to the agreements with the clinical supervisors and standards set by the higher education provider; and
• completes the curriculum's required number of hours in accordance with national legislation and EU Directive.

FAIL

The student:

• endangers the patient's safety resulting in possible harm or due to missed, rationed or unfinished nursing care;
• performs nursing tasks unethically;
• does not demonstrate the necessary skills and competencies required at the clinical practicum; and
• does not follow professional conduct (neglecting tasks, being impolite, disobedient, and disrespectful with patients and colleagues).
