ON00DV21 Mental Health Nursing (5 cr)
Prerequisites Level I and Level II studies are passed without deficits or the student has completed 140 credits of nursing studies and has passed the demonstration of competence in nursing.
Objectives The student:

• plans, implements (communication, documentation), and analyses the care of the client and family members, taking into account the client's situation and the overall experience;
• recognises the mental health disorders of an adult person and can use the assessment-, guiding- and helping methods while working in mental health care;
• assesses mental disorders from the point of view of medical diagnosis, symptoms, and their quantity, duration, and treatment;
• can act as a member of a multidisciplinary team, assesses and develops the quality of mental health care according to evidence-based knowledge, recommendations, and good practices; and
• integrate ethical nursing guidelines, mental health laws, regulations, and other guidelines into personal practice.
Content • Conscious working and the relationship with the client
• Psychotic-, personality-, mood-, neurotic and psychosomatic disorders of an adult person
• Assessment, guidance, and helping methods of mental health care.
• Psychiatric medication.
• Teamwork and experiences of client and dialogic work
• The quality of nursing, ethical work, laws concerning mental health care, and treatment.

A student is assessed according to the Assessment Framework of the Oulu University of Applied Sciences (Oamk). Areas of assessment include 1. professional knowledge base and information seeking; 2. professional skill, activity, and target of activity; 3. group work skills and leadership; and 4. responsibility.

Further Information Students choose their advanced studies in nursing according to their own career plans. It is worthwhile to find out in advance what educational and skills requirements employers have defined for nurses in different work communities.

Mental health nursing can also be chosen as an elective course. The prerequisites also apply to elective courses.
