ON00DV17 Palliative Nursing and Hospice Care (5 cr)
Prerequisites Level I and Level II studies are completed without deficits or the student has completed 140 credits of nursing studies and has passed the demonstration of competence in nursing.
Objectives The student is able to:

• demonstrate the key knowledge and skills required for palliative nursing and hospice care, make evidence-based decision making and perform nursing tasks independently under supervision;
• collaborate with palliative/hospice client(s)/patient(s) and their family members or next of kin to promote quality of life and dignified death;
• plan, implement and evaluate palliative/hospice client(s)/patient(s) care pathway ethically and safely using reliable evidence-based information;
• work in a multidisciplinary team as an expert in palliative nursing and hospice care;
• evaluate and develop personal and professional skills and competencies in a goal-oriented manner.
Content • Key concepts in palliative and hospice care
• Legislation and recommendations governing palliative and hospice care
• Treatment guidelines, limits, advance care planning, care consultation, advance care directive
• Levels of palliative care and service chains
• Home hospice care
• Mechanisms of onset and medical and non-medical management of common symptoms (pain, dyspnoea, GI tract symptoms, ascites, psychological symptoms, fatigue, cachexia, skin symptoms)
• Management of pain in different patient groups, medical management, in particular opioids, non-pharmacological pain management
• Self-report surveys and pain indicators
• Comprehensive encounter with palliative and terminal patients and their relatives, dialogue, and discussion of difficult issues
• Forms of support (psychosocial, informative, emotional, psychological, spiritual, existential, and practical)
• Multidisciplinary cooperation in the holistic care and support of palliative and terminally-ill patients

A student is assessed according to the Assessment Framework of the Oulu University of Applied Sciences (Oamk). Areas of assessment include 1. professional knowledge base and information seeking; 2. professional skill, activity, and target of activity; 3. group work skills and leadership; and 4. responsibility.

Further Information Students choose their advanced studies in nursing according to their own career plans. It is worthwhile to find out in advance what educational and skills requirements employers have defined for nurses in different work communities.

Palliative and hospice care can also be chosen as an elective course. The prerequisites also apply to elective courses.
