ON00DK47 Clinical Practicum in Fundamentals of Nursing Care (7 cr)
Prerequisites Fundamentals of Nursing
Objectives Primary Goal: The student achieves fundamental knowledge of planning, implementing, and evaluating patient safety in nursing.

Specific Goals:

The student is able to:

• perform vital sign assessments on patients;
• collect laboratory samples based on the physician's orders, including urine and fecal samples, blood sugar, and hemoglobin levels;
• participate in patients' basic hygiene care and rehabilitative activities, while considering ergonomic skills;
• demonstrate proper techniques for arranging unoccupied and occupied beddings;
• understand the process of death and participate in post-mortem care as necessary; and
• learn basic documentation skills using the patient information system.
Content Content of the Clinical Practicum

Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.
Accomplishment methods The internship is conducted within various units of primary health care, encompassing both public and private organizations. Nursing students are strategically placed in practical training settings that significantly enhance their employability prospects.

Evaluation Criteria

pass/fail
The student:

• defines and evaluates learning goals during and at the end of the clinical practicum;
• follows internship guidelines and work community rules;
• works professionally with the nursing staff and other allied health professionals;
• considers the principles of patient safety in nursing, infection control, and rehabilitative nursing, as well as sustainable development when implementing nursing;
• identifies and assesses the health and well-being of an individual patient/client as well as the basic needs of care and treats the patient using nursing functions and implements safe medication;
• makes decisions about the basic needs and medication care situations for an individual patient;
• informs about the treatment of an individual patient in writing and orally and takes into account data protection and security in their own activities;
• maps out the technology and digital methods used in nursing, taking into account the possibilities of the internship; and
• familiarises with the emergency procedures, resuscitation equipment/instructions, and the medication plan at the place of training.

A student is assessed according to the Assessment Framework of the Oulu University of Applied Sciences (Oamk). Areas of assessment include 1. professional knowledge base and information seeking; 2. professional skill, activity, and target of activity; 3. group work skills and leadership; and 4. responsibility. PASS

The student:

• achieves the objectives of the clinical practicum and as assessed by the clinical mentor in the clinical placement(s);
• performs clinical nursing tasks safely and independently under the supervision of the clinical mentor;
• participates in pre-deployment orientation(s), meetings with the clinical supervisor, collaborative activities(as needed) and adheres to the standards of nursing care ethically and with due diligence;
• submits the required assignments according to the agreements with the clinical supervisors and standards set by the higher education provider; and
• completes the curriculum's required number of hours in accordance with national legislation and EU Directive.

FAIL

The student:

• endangers the patient's safety resulting in possible harm or due to missed, rationed or unfinished nursing care;
• performs nursing tasks unethically;
• does not demonstrate the necessary skills and competencies required at the clinical practicum; and
• does not follow professional conduct (neglecting tasks, being impolite, disobedient, and disrespectful with patients and colleagues).

Further Information The course manager will provide pre-deployment information. Students are mandated to fulfill all prerequisites before their departure.

In the scenario of seeking accreditation, students are offered guidance regarding the accreditation process from the Head of the Degree Programme, the teacher overseeing the specific option, campus study counselors, the teacher tutor, or the course instructor. Furthermore, the Academic Affairs staff is available to assist students with their application process.
