AT00EM65 Orientating to Contemporary Dance and Pedagogy (4 cr)
Prerequisites If necessary, the student assesses his/her competence or participates in a competence level demonstration before starting his/her studies. If necessary, the student, teacher, tutor teacher, degree coordinator and/or study counsellor go through the student's competence and/or other recommended studies in personal study plan discussions.
Objectives I set skills goals and a plan for developing dance skills. I understand basic concepts of dance and variety in the reference frame of contemporary dance. I act responsibly in developing bodily capacities and dancing skills. In the learning and performance situation of dance, the basic movement material of contemporary dance in a dance specific style. I verbalize my bodied experiences and connect my experience to the phenomena of contemporary dance. I apply my bodily experiences for learning and teaching situations. I use teaching and guidance methods in a pedagogically reasoned way. I choose music that suits the objectives of the teaching situation. I assess the development and development needs of my skills and my strengths in relation to the requirements of working life.
Content Elementary and basic level material of contemporary dance.
Floor technique.
Fundamentals of improvisation. Partnering and contact-improvisation.
Understanding somatic movement methods in the context of contemporary dance.
Space, time, movement.
Information search. Interaction and reflections. Development of demonstration skills (body and verbal illustration). Planning, implementation and evaluation of the teaching system.
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.
Accomplishment methods Contact teaching, learning assignments, demonstration of dance and dance teaching skills at an assessment event in accordance with the instructions of the study module included in the dance teacher education programme in Oamk or demonstration of competence in accordance with a personal study plan. The student proposes a personal method of completion by initiating the HOT procedure in Peppi. The HOT application is addressed to the contemporary dance teacher.

1. I take full responsibility for developing my dancing skills.
2. I verbally express my experiences and combine my experience with the phenomena of social dance.
3. I recognize my learning needs and understand my responsibility in developing my own competence.
4. I master the basics of dance genres both as a leader and as a follower.
5. I dance according to the style of the material and recognize the movement management factors that are part of the dance.
6. Control of the rhythm of music is noticeable from my movements.
7. I use suitable dance terminology.
8. I am able to tell about the core phenomena, teaching culture and methods of Finnish Social Ballroom Dance culture.
9. I act responsibly in different learning situations and environments, taking into account others.
10. I evaluate my skills and development needs in relation to the operating cultures of Finnish Social Ballroom Dance.
