AT00DW70 Dance and Society (6 cr)
Prerequisites If necessary, the student, tutor teacher or/and study councellor will go through other recommended studies in HOPS discussions.
Objectives I conceive how dance, dance practices, and the concept of dance are constructed and defined in relation to culture. I am aware of different dance phenomena on a global level. I understand the general outline of trajectories of history and aesthetics of western and in particular Finnish dance forms. I recognise connections between dance phenomena. I understand the outline of dance as a part of general social structures. I recognise dance related processes through which views and practices concerning gender are constructed. I analyse the different ways in which dance can function as a means of political power and resistance or promotion towardspluralistic and tolerant society. I interpret and evaluate dance analytically and critically in its sociocultural context, and I express my views in an articulated manner.
Content Cultural definition of dance and its relation to religion. History and present state of western and Finnish dance. Global phenomena of popular dance. The social, political and competitive character of dance. Advancing discussion and argumentation skills related to dance. Dance analysis and writing about dance.
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.

1. I develop my professional skills through learning tasks.
2. I describe the construction and definition of the concept of dance, dance practices and dance.
3. I name the phenomena of dance on a global level and describe the relationships between dance phenomena.
4. I describe the development cycles included in the history and aesthetics of both western and Finnish dance forms in general.
5. I indicate the social significance and effectivity of dance.
6. The critical analysis of a work of dance or a dance event is based on the perspective I have chosen.
7. I express my justifiable views in a conceivable form in writing.
