SU00DB70 Periodontal Care (7 cr)
Prerequisites Not applicable
Objectives PART 1: BASICS OF PERIODONTAL CARE (2 ECTS)
The student
- demonstrates ability to explain the structure and function of healthy periodontal tissues
- gains theoretical knowledge of periodontal care and methods involved in basic periodontal treatment
- is able to assess the oral health status and identify changes

PART 2: ADVANCED STUDIES IN PERIODONTOLOGY (3 ECTS)
The student
- deepens his/her knowledge of periodontal diseases and their impact on general health
- understands the impact of aging or use of certain medication for oral health
- familiarizes with various treatment methods
- understands the indications and implementation of periodontal surgery

PART 3: DISEASES OF THE ORAL MUCOSA (1 ECTS)
The student
- gains basic knowledge of the diseases of oral mucosa
- is able to identify common and important changes in oral mucous membrane
- knows how to guide patient as a dental hygienist

PART 4.INTOXICANTS AND ORAL HEALTH (1,5 ECTS) The student has gained knowledge about the relationship between intoxicants and oral health. The student demonstrates ability to give counselling and guidance to clients concerning relationship between use of intoxicants and oral health care.
Content PART 1: BASICS OF PERIODONTAL CARE (2 ECTS)
Structure of periodontal tissue, oral health examination. Periodontal diseases´ etiology, manifestation and treatment. Dental hygienist´s role in periodontal care team.

PART 2: ADVANCED STUDIES IN PARODONTOLOGY (3 ECTS)
Special issues concerning parodontology. Periodontal surgery. Dental hygienist´s role in the care of patient undergoing periodontal surgery.

PART 3: DISEASES OF THE ORAL MUCOSA (1 ECTS)
Most common and important diseases of oral mucosa, their treatment.

PART 4. INTOXICANTS AND ORAL HEALTH (1 ECTS)
Impact of tobacco, snuff, alcohol and drugs on oral health. Dental hygienist and guidance.
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.

The student is able to utilize the necessary terminology and describe the knowledge, factors and phenomena related to learning contents as well as perform the tasks related to his/her area of responsibility.

Part 4: The student will be able to name the principles of use of different tobacco products and e-cigarettes and know the factors that influence addiction. The student will be able to explain the relationship between substance abuse and general health and oral health. Identify guidance materials used in oral health guidance.

Part 4: The student will be able to describe the principles of use of different tobacco products and e-cigarettes and the importance of addiction in substance use. The student will understand the relationship of substance abuse to general health and oral health. The student will be able to encourage clients to be substance-free and to illustrate oral health care guidance using current care recommendations and guidance materials.
