SU00CF67 Promotion of Oral Health Care (11 cr)
Prerequisites PART 4. ORAL HEALTH CARE FOR THE AGEING POPULATION 1.5 op: 3. year oral hygiene students
Objectives PART 1.ORAL HEALTH CARE 3 ECT
1.The student has gained theoretical knowledge of oral health care and demonstrates ability to give counselling and guidance to clients concerning oral health care. The student has an understanding of the impact of oral health on the general health and well of a client.

PART 2. NUTRITION AND ORAL HEALTH 2 ECTS
The student has gained knowledge about diets and nutrition and their impact on oral health maintenance and promotion. The student demonstrates ability to give counselling and guidance to clients concerning nutrition and oral health care.

PART 3: ORAL HEALTH CARE OF THE EXPECTANT FAMILY AND CHILDREN 3 ECTS
The student has gained knowledge about factors affecting the oral health of pregnant women and children under seven years of age. The student has an understanding of the impact of oral health on the well-being of families.
The student demonstrates ability to give counselling and guidance in oral health care to families and children under seven years of age. The student is able to carry out examinations of the oral health status of children under seven years of age routinely performed by a dental hygienist.

Part 4: ORAL HEALTH CARE AMONG THE ELDERLY 1,5 ECTS
The student will be able to
- understand the ageing process and the factors that contribute to ageing well.
- know about legislation on older people and the various social and health services for older people.
- describe the impact of ageing on oral health
- describe the specific characteristics of elderly people with memory problems and those at high risk.
- take the ageing client into account when planning oral care and guiding self-care
- plan and implement multidisciplinary cooperation in oral care of older people in different settings.

Part 5. PROSTHETICS 1,5 ECTS
The student familiarizes him/herself with prosthetics. The student gains knowledge of different phases of prosthetic treatments. The student demonstrates ability to give counselling and guidance to clients concerning denture care at home.
Content PART 1.ORAL HEALTH CARE 3 ECTS
Oral health care to all age groups: theoretical knowledge and methods (plaque control, mouth care products, fluoride, xylitol, dry mouth treatment). Impact of oral health on the overall general health.

PART 2. NUTRITION AND ORAL HEALTH 2 ECTS
Diets and nutrition and their impact on oral health; special diets and their impact on oral health.

PART 3: ORAL HEALTH CARE OF THE EXPECTANT FAMILY AND CHILDREN 3 ECTS
Relationship between pregnancy and oral health. Factors affecting the oral health of children under seven years of age. Relationship between oral health and well-being. Oral health care services performed by a dental hygienist at child health clinic.

PART 4. ORAL HEALTH CARE AMONG THE ELDERLY 1,5 ECTS
The role of oral health in the well-being and general health of older people. Legislation and service and care plans for older people. The impact of ageing on oral health and oral self-care. Approaches to oral health care for older people who are independent and assisted.
The role of the oral hygienist in the oral care of older people in different settings.

PART 5. PROSTHETICS 1,5 ECTS
The student familiarizes him/herself with prosthetics. The student gains knowledge of different phases of prosthetic treatments. The student demonstrates ability to give counselling and guidance to clients concerning denture care at home

PART 1.ORAL HEALTH CARE 3 ECTS
Students will identify the importance of oral health and oral self-care for the well-being of clients of different ages. The student will know the main quality requirements of oral hygiene equipment and oral care products and the methods of oral hygiene assessment. The student will be able to instruct clients in the use of oral hygiene equipment, oral care products and xylitol.

PART 3: ORAL HEALTH CARE OF THE EXPECTANT FAMILY AND CHILDREN 3 ECTS
Students will identify the changes in maternal oral health caused by pregnancy. The student will identify factors associated with oral health of the fetus and the child of childbearing age. The student will be able to describe the importance of a healthy family lifestyle for the oral health of the child. The student will be able to provide guidance to expectant parents, families and children of childbearing age on oral health issues. The student will be familiar with the implementation of a multi-professional approach to dental care in a maternity clinic.

PART 4. ORAL HEALTH CARE FOR THE AGEING POPULATION 1,5 ECTS
Can recognise the impact of ageing on oral health and the specific characteristics of people with memory impairment and senile degenerative syndrome.
Recognise the ageing process and the factors that contribute to good ageing. To be able to take into account the specificities of the ageing client in oral care planning and self-care management. Be familiar with legislation on older people and the various social and health care services for older people
and implement multi-professional cooperation in oral care for older people in different settings.

PART 5. PROSTHETICS 1,5 ECTS
The student will be able to identify different types of dentures. Can identify the main materials used in prosthodontics. Can explain to the patient the steps involved in the preparation of a denture. Can guide the patient in the self-care of different types of dentures.

PART 3: ORAL HEALTH CARE OF THE EXPECTANT FAMILY AND CHILDREN 3 ECTS
The student knows the changes in maternal oral health caused by pregnancy and can describe the factors related to the oral health of the foetus and the child of childbearing age. The student will understand the importance of healthy family lifestyles for the oral health of the child. The student will be able to provide guidance to expectant parents, families and children of childbearing age on oral health issues. Understand the specificities of the ageing client in planning oral care and managing self-care and know how to plan, implement and develop multi-professional cooperation in oral care for older people in different settings.

PART 2: PART 2. NUTRITION AND ORAL HEALTH 2 ECTS
Students will be able to describe the importance of healthy eating habits for oral health and identify the links between the most common nutritional factors and oral health in different age groups. Know the associations of different diets with oral health. The student will be able to act in accordance with nutritional recommendations when guiding clients in maintaining oral health. The student will be able to prepare a nutritional assessment and instructions for the client based on the results.
