Description


TS00DT47 Geotechnics and Foundation Engineering (5 cr)
Prerequisites No prerequisites needed.
Objectives The student is able to name the most general rock types in Finland, is able to classify the most typical soil layers including their mode of origin. The student is able to name the different soil types and is able to determine the basic characteristics of the soil types and their meaning in building. The student is able to describe the formation of ground water, the occurences of water in ground, the meaning of ground water and capillarity in building. The student knows the principles of frost protection.

The student becomes familiar with foundation investigation and analyses of foundation investigation and foundation engineering. He/She becomes acquainted with the main foundation methods of house building foundation and infrastructure as well as the principles in subgrade reinforcement. The student has the skills to evaluate the need for different retaining walls. The student becomes familiar with drainage and drainage principles in soil and ground water and knows the ways of protection.
Content The formation of minerals, stones, rock and soil, classification of soil types. Groundwater; formation, occurrence and the meaning in civil engineering, Darcy¿s Law, frost, frost depth, frost heave, principles of protecting structures against frost. Geostatic stresses, earth pressure, soil settling, bearing capacity and stability of soil.

Foundation investigation, foundation investigation plans, foundation methods. Soils in house building, backfilling and compacting. Assembly of pipelines. Small sloped excavations, keeping the excavation area dry from ponding. Groundwater lowering, hydraulic failure, internal erosion. Drainage. Environmental issues, polluted soils and foundation engineering.
