OQ00DW15 Client Oriented Mammography and Ultrasound Examinations and Interventions (4 cr)

Objectives The student can explain the evidence-based knowledge that guides the planning, implementation, and evaluation of clinical and screening mammography and ultrasound examinations and interventions. The student can explain the principles of mammography and ultrasound examinations and mammography- and ultrasound-guided procedures. The student can explain the radiographer’s role as a team member in multi-professional cooperation, taking safety into account. The student can explain the principles of customer-oriented guidance and care in clinical radiography. The student understands the importance of preparations as part of high-quality and safe diagnostics. The student can explain the principles of radiation exposure optimization in mammography examinations and procedures. The student can explain the factors affecting image quality in mammography examinations.

The student can explain the operating principles of a mammography device based on radiation physics. The student can apply his knowledge of quality assurance. The student knows the reference doses for mammography. The student can explain the physics-based operating principles of an ultrasound device and the importance of quality assurance in ultrasound diagnostics.
Content Part 1. (2 cr) Mammography examinations. Mammography-guided interventions. Guiding and caring for the patient/client in mammography examinations and procedures. Optimization of radiation exposure in mammography examinations. The role of the radiographer in mammography examinations and procedures.

Part 2. (1 cr) Ultrasound examinations. Guiding and caring for the patient/client in ultrasound examinations and interventions. The role of the radiographer in ultrasound examinations and procedures. Safety guidelines in ultrasound examinations and procedures.

Part 3. (1 cr) Physical basis of image formation in mammography and ultrasound imaging. The structure, function, image processing and quality assurance of mammography and ultrasound devices. Determination of radiation exposure and factors affecting exposure in mammography examinations.

Evaluation Criteria satisfactory (1-2)
Students will demonstrate the knowledge base of mammography and ultrasound examinations and interventions. Can justify his/her actions using professional knowledge and search for information from sources. The student will demonstrate knowledge of basic mammography and ultrasound examinations and safety practices for mammography and ultrasound interventions. The student will participate and contribute to the group. Can perform a variety of tasks in the mammography and ultrasound examination and intervention environment.

Students will be able to use the professional terminology of mammography and ultrasound examinations and interventions in a consistent manner. Can critically evaluate the sources of information used. Be able to search for information according to the different steps of the information gathering process. The student is able to apply his/her professional knowledge in different work settings in the field of mammography, ultrasound and mammography and ultrasound interventions. Can act independently and responsibly in a professional context. The student is able to work in a team to achieve a common goal. The student is able to plan his/her activities taking into account safety aspects. Demonstrates familiarity with the mammography and ultrasound examination and intervention in a professional ethical environment. Able to work in a mammography environment in a team environment.
