Description


OQ00CT81 Patient Examination and Nursing Care (7 cr)
Prerequisites No prerequisites.
Objectives PART 1 (3 ECTS). The student is able to practice and carry out clinical skills in patient´s nursing care and in the art of radiography and radiation therapy. The student is able to teach and guide the patient and his / her next of kin. The student is able to carry out mental support and bases of professional interaction in the art of radiography and radiation therapy.

PART 2 (3 ECTS). The student is able to examine the patient´s basic vital functions by using ABCDE protocol.The student is able to examine and treat the patient suffering from respiratory distress. The student is able to examine and treat the patient with symptoms of shock.The student is able to examine and treat the patient whose level of consciousness has lowered. The student is able to give CRP to the patient with cardiac arrest in hospital environment.

PART 3 (1 ECTS)). The students is able to describe changes in a person´s health related to substance abuse, crisis and mental problems. The students knows the bases of mental support and professional interaction in the art of radiography and radiation therapy. The student is able to pay attention to sustainable development in his / her actions.
Content PART 1 (3 ECTS)). Creation of a safe nursing care environment and helping the patient in his/her daily activities (bed as patient´s environment, management of hygiene, providing mouth care, helping in eating). Clinical skills in nursing practice (assessing blood pressure, pulse, breathing frequency, urinary catheterization, managing intravenous fluid therapy, administering tube feeding, enemas) and medication administration (subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, iv cannula, medication per os, managing inhalant medication, drug calculation) as well as patient examination according to ABCD procedure in the art of radiography and radiation therapy. Asepsis and ergonomics in nursing care. Interaction and communication in nursing care. Basic principles of care for a dying patient. Teaching and guiding in radiographer´s work.

PART 2 (3 ECTS). Examination of the level of breathing, blood circulation and consciousness. Examination and treatment of patient with difficulties in breathing, with shock, with lowered consciousness level, carrying out resuscitation and the electrocardiogram (EKG). Technical and non technical skills.

PART 3 (1 ECTS). Professional interaction with a patient with substance abuse, depressed patient, suicidal patient, psychotic patient and debriefing of challenging situations. Traumatic crises and normal reactions in traumatic situations. Crisis due to serious disease. Forms of nursing interventions in different phases of a crisis.
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.
Accomplishment methods Independent online study and doing advance assignments before practice classes. Participation in class practice. Approved completion of medical calculations. Passed completion of the theory examination according to the assessment.

Assessment Frameworks Not applicable
Further Information If the student has completed similar studies at another university of applied sciences, the course can be credited based on the HOT application and certificate attachments. If the student has a practical nursing degree, some of the class exercises can be credited as indicated in the course info. However, the course assignments and the exam are mandatory regardless of possible grades.
