Description

OM00CA08 Visual Optics (3 cr)
Prerequisites Participation in the OM00CA06 Geometrical Optics and OM00CA07 Physical Optics courses.
Objectives The candidate should demonstrate fundamental knowledge and insight into visual optics in order for the candidate to be able to understand and solve problems related to image formation, both qualitative and quantitative, for the candidate to investigate the optics of the human visual system and refractive correction. Knowledge and understanding should be demonstrated in the areas of: (1) schematic eye models
(2) dioptric of the eye, (3) entopic phenomena, (4) quality of retinal image, (5) radiation and the eye.
Content Schematic eye models (Dioptric components, Cardinal points, entrance and exit pupil, Ametropia: far point, near point, correction
Accommodation: amplitude and effectivity, Astigmatism, including correction, Retinal image size, spectacle magnification, and relative spectacle magnification).
Dioptric of the eye (Characteristics of components (curvature, thickness, separation, refractive indices, and axial length), Reference angles and axes, Catoptric (Purkinje) images, Retinal image size, Optical function of the pupil)
Quality of the retinal image (Aberrations (spherical, chromatic, coma, curvature, oblique astigmatism, distortion), Diffraction , Stray light, Point and line spread functions).

Radiation and the eye
Radiometry (radiant, intensity, radiance, and irradiance)
Photometry (Luminosity function, luminous intensity, luminance, and illuminance,
Lambertian surfaces-cosine laws)
Spectral transmission of the ocular media
Retinal illuminance
Effects of radiation (especially infrared, visible and ultraviolet)
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.
Accomplishment methods Participation in practical tasks.
Final exam.
Execution methods Theory 2 ects
Supervised work 1 ects

Evaluation Criteria 0-5
Evaluation Criteria satisfactory (1-2)
You will identify terms, ranges and units related to the themes of visual optics. You know individual phenomena of visual optics and use the theory to describe and solve some basic problems.

good (3-4)
You can describe the basic principles of visual optics and you can use your knowledge to describe and solve the problems and tasks that have been given.

excellent (5)
You are able to explain the basic principles of visual optics and to use your knowledge to solve the problems and tasks that have been given in a variety of ways. You assess the appropriateness of the methods you use on a theoretical basis in situations in your profession.
