OS00DY26 Palliative nursing and hospice care (5 cr)

Objectives -Understand the importance of key laws and recommendations governing palliative and end-of-life care and the importance of a advance care plan in the overall care of a patient in palliative care.

-I can plan, implement and evaluate comprehensive symptom management for palliative care patients using symptom indicators and evidence-based methods and act in accordance with ethical values and principles in care situations

-Ability to use psychosocial, existential and spiritual support methods to support patients and their relatives and to act as a nursing expert in a multi-professional team
Content - Key concepts in palliative and hospice care
- Legislation and recommendations governing palliative and hospice care
- Care guidelines and advance care planning
- The three-tiered model of palliative and hospice care
- Home hospice care
- Mechanisms of onset and medical and non-medical management of the most common symptoms in patients in palliative care
- Self-report surveys and indicators
- Non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatment of pain and specific methods of pain management
- Comprehensive encounter with palliative and terminal patients and their relatives, dialogue and acknowledgement of difficult issues
- Forms of support (psycho-social, informative, emotional, psychological, spiritual, existential and practical)
- Multidisciplinary cooperation in the overall care and support of palliative and terminal patients

- Knowledge of palliative and hospice care policies and treatment boundaries, and the importance of proactive care planning and the will to care for the patient
- I can use individual symptom indicators and questionnaires to assess a patient's symptoms
-Know the different methods of medical and non-medical treatment
-Know the individual needs of patients and their relatives and know how to use psychosocial support methods to meet and support patients and their relatives
- I am familiar with different communication methods and aids that support or replace speech
- I know the possibilities of multidisciplinary cooperation in providing support to patients and their relatives
- Understand the importance of well-being at work in palliative care
