MM00EC36 Classical Harmony and Voice-Leading (5 cr)

Objectives I can write tonal and contrapuntal harmony and voice-leading. I master various techniques in harmony writing and understand their relationship to musical style and expression. I understand the musical weave as a stylistic entity formed by different elements, and I can solve various problems related to harmony and voice-leading.
Content - Stylist imitation of 18th-20th century tonal and post-tonal harmony and voice-leading. The course focuses on 4-5 voice SATB-harmony;
- Writing harmony with main chords; 1st inversion chords; A cadential fourth-sixth chord; Dominant 7th chord; Substituted II and VI; III and VII, and their inversions; Marjor, minor and diminished 7th chords; Secondary dominants; Mode mixture; Augmented sixth chords; Ambiguous chords; Modulations and key combinations; non-chord tones; Cadences (PAC, IAC, HC, PC); Chromaticity and chromatically extended tonality
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.

Evaluation Criteria

pass/fail
The assessment (pass/fail) is based on doing homework and portfolio.

Passed: The student shows through their portfolio that they have learned to write credibly different tonal and post-tonal harmony and voice-leading. The harmony and voice-leading written by the student demonstrates mastery of stylistic imitation and musical problem-solving ability.
